Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard about mushroom coffee. Spearheaded by a Finnish company by the name of FourSigmatic, their various blends of fungi with instant coffee have been recommended by everyone from nootropedia to Tim Ferriss on his podcast. Since the majority of you are actually looking for ways to move away from coffee rather than make it more stimulating, it made me wonder, could mushroom elixirs act as a complete stand in for coffee? Or I guess the real question is: are mushrooms a good replacement for caffeine?
The history of mushrooms and the current craze
Mushrooms, like pretty much every other "recent" health discovery and craze, have been around thousands of years. In fact, one of the oldest human mummies in existence (over 4,000 years old) was found with a commonly used medicinal mushroom in his pouch. Commonly used in ancient China, and even Rome, mushrooms have been known to provide energy, cure disease, strengthen the mind, and much more. So, it stand to reason that in the super health conscious age, one of the most versatile and effects natural medicines and supplements would be having its heyday.
